Ezri Speaks

Glasses with attached mustache = classy

Here’s some Ezri quotes.

“I’m the center of contention.”

“I have a rumbly in my bumbly.” followed by fart noises.

Ezri is trying to work out what is funny. She is testing a theory that saying things obviously false to both parties is amusing.
“Eagles can’t fly.” Ezri laughs and then pauses, “Is that funny?”
“Don’t stop at stop signs.” Ezri laughs and then pauses, “Is that funny?”
Humor is tricky.

Ezri does know there’s such a thing as a bad joke.
She told me that “The Joker is a bad guy who tells bad jokes.” I’ve also learned he would probably take your snack instead of sharing his snack with you. That Joker is pretty evil.

Ezri is struggling with understanding that words have multiple meanings and that we speak in idioms.
I said “the proof is in the pudding.” And Ezri asked about pudding having a roof and then how do you eat it with its roof on.
I took off my glasses and said that “things were fuzzy.” Ezri was super puzzled as fuzzy means only like a furry teddy bear to her. She asked how that worked and if she could do it. Eric and I explained about the other meaning of “fuzzy.” The next day she took of her sunglasses and said, “Now everything is fluffy.” It took me a minute to figure out what she was referencing.

The Costume Box Rocks

Pete the Cat

Ezri had a blast at the “Pete the Cat” signing at Anderson’s Bookstore in Downers Grove tonight.

“I need a tank top and skirt to be a ballerina!”

For our dance party today Ezri declared her need for a tank top and skirt like ballerinas wear. I explained they wear leotards some of which have straps like tank tops. Then I remembered we had one that Grandma Liz had found at a thrift store. Once it was on Ezri looked at her feet and declared the need for ballerina shoes. Then I remembered we had Meghan’s old dancing slippers.

So, she was thrilled to be properly outfitted and used her step stool as her practice bar. Her form may need improvement, but the joy of dance she has down pat.

Dressing Up in Aunt Amy’s Dress

Ezri is tall for this dress though it fits perfectly around her. It was Amy’s when she was a child.
She decided it was a dancing dress making it almost impossible to take a photo of her wearing it.

Ezri is also showing off her diaper while dancing. She has declared she will wear diapers because she is two and then underwear when she is three. That gives her about five more days for diapers. We will see how that goes. She does use her potty every evening and sometimes during the day, but likes the comfort and security of her diaper.

She got cold, but still wanted to wear the dancing dress. So, we put on an underlayer.

Happy Halloween!

A very fun posse assembled for the trick-or-treating. Ezri and company traveled in style in dad-drawn wagons.

My favorite trick-or-treating moment was when these three girls realized they could not reach the doorbell and began jumping for it.
Don’t worry someone came to the door with candy even though it didn’t get rung.

I also enjoyed Ezri discovering candles inside neighborhood jack-o-lanterns and blowing a couple out before I could stop her. She sang Happy Birthday to the pumpkins as she blew out the candles. Clearly, that’s what candles are for – blowing out and singing.

Halloween Storytime at the Riverwalk

Many costumed kiddos gathered to watch Naperville library staff present stories, songs and a puppet show on the scenic Riverwalk. It was a grand time!

Watching the storytellers

Watching the ducks in the river

Truck or Treat

Ezri got to climb in a garbage truck and a street sweeper. She spent some time in the back of a sheriff’s car. She practiced saying “trick or treat” and saw a lot of costumed compatriots.

She loves her costume. It was made by Grandma Liz. Ezri painted the shoes herself. Here is a photo that is not great, but shows how much she likes to groove in her Pete the Cat suit. She will dance and play harmonica as Pete.

Here she is behind the wheel of a construction vehicle. Letting the kids climb into the big vehicles is a genius idea. It was so appealing to the kids to be behind the wheel. Plus some vehicles had horns they could push. *BEEP* Thank goodness all sirens were turned off.

It was dusky, so not the best light for photos. Here is Pete holding her Pete doll.

Afterwards, Pete got a chocolate for the ride home.

Me: Ezri, what was your favorite thing at the Halloween Happening?
Was it the firetruck?
Ezri: No.
Me: Was it the garbage truck?
Ezri: No.
Me: Was it seeing Spider-man?
Ezri: No.
Me: What was your favorite thing?
Ezri: CANDY!
(At this point she had eaten one small chocolate bar, but climbed in six different trucks and seen all sorts of costumed people. I guess it was a good chocolate bar and there was power in knowing she had more.)

Halloween Gnome

Today Ezri helped me decorate for Halloween.
In the box of Halloween things she found this plush witch hat. She put it on and declared, “Look, mama, I’m a gnome – a special gnome – a Halloween gnome!”
I am raising the kid who is intimately familiar with gnomes, but has never heard of a witch.

She also found a fancy kitty collar from an old costume of mine and asked for whiskers.

What a great fancy-kitty-Halloween-gnome she makes!

BIG Sister Monkey

Ezri found my monkey hat in the closet.
What you don’t have one of these in your closet?

Ezri put it on and said, “I am a big sister monkey.” She then ran to find her sock monkey and “here is baby brother monkey.”

She then taught her baby brother monkey important things like how to gently pet the cats.

She decided baby monkey needed to go for a stroller walk.

Here she is tickling her baby brother monkey.

Then we had to go inside. Ezri said baby monkey was hot and he needed a drink.
