So, this doll was made by mother for me twice. The first doll wore blue and played with me in childhood, but eventually was stored in a box in the garage that met a raccoon and was nested in by said raccoon – an untimely end. Ezri was fascinated by this story of doll destruction. She is currently napping with this new Cinderella and was heard telling her, “I won’t let the raccoons get you.” We are keeping new Cinderella safe. She is actually a very clever flip-doll, so the evil stepmother and stepsisters are under her skirt and can be seen when the doll is flipped over. Thanks, Tam!

Daddy Mountain

This is the result of a game we call “climbing the Daddy Mountain.” Ezri scales Eric. Then he gives her a boost so she can make her final ascent and touch the ceiling.
Here’s the descent.
Home for the day
February 16th, 2012 — at play
Ivan has a bit of a cough and is off his normally delightful baby mode.
So, Ezri and I were around the house all day.
Hoo-RAY for crafts!
Ezri decorated a photo frame with sequins. We used glue dots to stick them on. Glue dots are a favorite craft supply for any child who is not yet to be trusted with a bottle of glue. I think the resulting frame is pretty sparkle-tastic, not sure if Ezri will let me take it to my office yet.
A friend made Ezri craft kits for her birthday. She chose the necklace kit. I learned she CAN string beads if they are these awesome iridescent chunky ones. Also, I learned that she will spend a long time deciding just when is the right moment to string the orange butterfly bead. She was very clear that this necklace was just for her and she was not making it for mama. Here she is wearing her accessories.
We played with play dough. Ezri made cookies and pizza and sandwiches out of play dough. We made finger puppet fairy cats complete with dough wings. She served me alien pie with a small plastic alien embedded in the dough. Then she decided to be Santa and wrap presents. These presents were small plastic animals wrapped inside dough balls. I would go to my room and pretend to sleep, coming close to actual sleep a couple times. Then I’d wake up and come out and open my presents. Look, a plastic meerkat!!! Thanks, Santa.
While downstairs playing dollhouse, I sewed the wings back onto one of Ezri’s small fairy dolls. She found this amazing and I felt a bit like a superhero.
We had a dance party. You can sing “Raggedy Ann” in place of “Barbara Ann” in The Beach Boys’ classic song. Ezri likes to dance with her Raggedy Ann doll, so this was a hit.
And, yes, Ezri stayed in her P.J. top all day though she did put on two different pairs of daytime pants. The first pair got play dough on them and Ezri declared them no longer fit to wear.
Stump Chase
February 3rd, 2012 — at play
We went outside to play a little game Ezri likes to call “stump chase.”
You are right our stump is not hard to catch.
The game is to run away from the stump and then to run back to the stump. It is not clear that there is a way to win, beyond having fun running outside.
This photo of Ezri and the stump makes her look a bit like a little boy from the late 70s to me.
Snow playing on MLK Day
January 16th, 2012 — at play
The top of the hill was running out of snow.
But there was enough for a good ride, if you had a Meghan to kick start the sled for you.
The warmer temperatures made it nice out. They also made the snow the right texture to build a snowfriend. Meghan loaned her scarf and Ivan loaned his hat to this little guy we built on a park bench.
Ezri enjoyed “decorating” the snowman by adding snow.
Meghan also introduced Ezri to the game of snow burial.
Ezri loved being tucked under a snowy blanket.
She stayed still until she was all covered but her head.
In the car after the park, Ezri and I talked about what we did.
We went sledding and made a snowman and made snow angels and played on the seesaw and we met a dog out walking with his family and Ezri was buried in snow.
I asked, “Ezri, what was your favorite part of going to the park?”
Her enthusiastic answer, “MEGHAN! Meghan comed and that was my favorite part.”
Yep, I was going to say the snowman, but on second thought I agree with Ezri.
Fruity Dominos
January 7th, 2012 — at play
One of the nice things about now is there are lots of new toys in the house to play with.
These “fruitominos” were fun to stack and knock over. The rock family liked their domino house. Ezri really enjoyed making domino sidewalks for the rocks to “walk” on. She also liked the game where I made a letter and she guessed which letter it was.
First Snow
December 19th, 2011 — at play
About a week ago we had our first snow. Ezri looked out at the dusting of snow and said, “Now Meghan and I can go sledding!” I thought we better go out and play in the snow fast because it might all melt by afternoon.
It took me way too long to realize that Ezri wanted to tuck Baby Cory in her jacket and wear her in the snow because that is exactly what I do with Ivan on our outside adventures.
Here’s me with Ivan in my coat.
Here’s Ezri making a snow angel with Baby Cory in her coat.
Here she is getting ready to go out. There wasn’t much snow and I was not sure Ezri needed her snow pants, but she insisted. Since she wanted to roll around in the dusting of snow, turns out the 2 year-old was right.
We also did some snow writing and drawing with sticks.
It’s an easy clean-up project since it will just melt away later!
This drawing was of a castle where a princess and a queen lived and a forest where a dragon and three bears lived together in a cave.
You could tell that, right? The castle is in the hose loop and the forest is outside of it.
Ezri can not yet write letters yet, but she does recognize her name when it’s written in upper-case block letters. “E-Z-R-I that spells me.”
It was a fun snowy morning and not too cold to really spend some time outside. We looked at animal tracks (mostly domestic feline), played on the slide, and snow stomped.
Outside
November 30th, 2011 — at play
I am inspired by the book Fifteen Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids
The idea of going outside at least briefly with your kids each day despite the weather appeals to me. Today was easy because the sun was shining.
Outside we played shrubbery peekaboo.
Ezri gave the tree its medicine. This involves placing small twigs in a knot in our maple tree to make the tree feel better.
We shared an apple and noted that there was a fly who liked honeycrisp apples too. This was the one easy idea I took from the book today – snacks can be extra fun when taken outside.
We heard a squirrel in the wooded area next to the driveway and worked to spot it.
We picked a red leaf for the nature jar.
Ezri said, “I love this leaf. I don’t want a caterpillar to eat it.”
I told her there aren’t caterpillars this time of year.
