December 26th, 2013 — Ezri speaks, holidays

Another collection of quotable Ezri:
e: In the future we go to the Dinosaur Park.
A: How do you know that?
e: I remember it.
e: Knock Knock
A: Who’s there?
e: Breck.
A: Breck who?
e: Breakfast walk on a pancake. I wish our floor was made of pancakes.
“Good drinks are even specialer with people you love.” This is a comment on her memories of drinking chocolate “coffee” (Ovaltine) with Arden and it also strikes me it is a universal truth.
i: Ivan is big! Ivan is big.
e: Did you say Irish Pig?
At night passing a store window filled with lighted Christmas trees, “Behold! Christmas trees.” A block further passing a lighted Citgo sign, “Behold! The Gas Station!”
As we passed a large inflatable lawn Santa who had his illumination in the groin area, “Why does Santa have a little, red wedgie?”
“Wouldn’t it be easier to make a snowman if we had a dog?” She has a theory that it would fetch us good sticks to use for the arms.

December 17th, 2013 — cooking, holidays, Ivan
Ezri got to pick our frosting colors. So, it’s pink & purple.

Ivan helped decorate too.

The final product looked like this.

Ezri explained to Ivan in a matter-of-fact tone that, “the spaghetti monster is on top just like always.”
I love the tree with all it’s kid-made ornaments. Thanks to Charlotte, Julia, and Eleanor for adding to our ornament cluttered perfection.
Here are a couple photos of Ezri decorating. She has some real ornament application skills this year. There was a very picturesque snow going on out the window as we decorated.

December 5th, 2013 — books, holidays

That’s the last night of Hanukkah celebration. Each kid got a Zelf toy, but could not hold still for a group photo. At least it’s a decent photo of the zelfs (zelves perhaps).
We continued our now annual outing to buy books for disadvantaged kids this year. This was the first year I think Ezri understood the spirit of this action. She kept asking about people who didn’t own many books. “How many books does she have? Does she have only like six and then the ones from the library?” We talked about how if you don’t have much money and struggle to pay for food and your housing you might never buy a book because they are important but less important than food and a place to live. She kept coming back to, “How many books does she have?” I think the idea of a home without books was understandably inconceivable to my kid.
Ezri bought a book for a 5 year old girl and after carefully considering all the Pinkalicious books (and only the Pinkalicious books) in the store she chose Emeraldalicious.
Ivan happily pointed and said “Dat one! Button. Read it.” at the book,Don’t Push the Button by Bill Cotter. Which I took to be his choice for a 2 year-old boy.
I picked a title for a teen girl who I hope likes Matched by Ally Condie. It seemed a good wide appeal book with its dystopian romance.
Here’s Ezri with our completed Menurkey who she has named Menurka.

November 1st, 2013 — dress-up, halloween, holidays
Pumpkin decorating involved a small wooden hammer. Both my kids like banging pegs into a pumpkin. See Ezri tongue bite of concentration. It makes her look like my father.

Ezri decided to paint her pumpkin purple & pink.

Here Ezri asks if it is too rainy to Trick-or-Treat.

Our first stop has a nice, dry porch for the Princess of Light. Her preschool teachers told me that she explained yesterday that she was the Princess of Light who brings the sun. They asked me where the character is from – I do not know. Meghan who took the photo below explained that “this was the face she made right after explaining to me very sweetly that ‘a princess’s job is to give orders and everybody has to listen because she is the princess.'” This is also the stop where after being given candy, Ezri asked for a slice of cheese.

Here I think the princess is getting ready for a masquerade ball.

Here is the posse we went Trick-or-Treating with. Luckily, the weather was down to a drizzle by this point and we even saw a patch of blue sky.

The vampire and the princess did a great job going from house to house and saying their Trick or Treats and Thank yous. They were often hand-in-hand along the path. They particularly enjoyed the house with the fog machine at the door that got turned on for kids ringing the bell. Spooktastic.

October 22nd, 2013 — dress-up, holidays, Ivan
She thought about being a Super Princess Kitty (from the book of the same name). In this picture she is a Super Princess Kitty with her pink super cape and her kitty hat and her princess dress. She’s holding up a magic ring that spreads friendship wherever you fire it (or so says the Princess Super Kitty).

It turned out when we went out she really wanted a princess crown and face glitter instead of ears and whiskers. She did wear her Super E cape a bit, so she was a Super Princess. I wore kitty ears on a handband and my cape to be a Super Kitty. So together “the girls” as Ezri calls our duo had Super, Princess and Kitty all covered.
Here she is with her brother Super Spider-man, all set to go out.

Here she is very proud of her candy haul from the event.

June 10th, 2013 — holidays, Ivan
We were mixing up colors.

Then there was applying the whipped cream from a can and shaking on plenty of purple and pink sprinkles.

Then we needed to reapply additional pink and purple sprinkles once Ezri had eaten all the sprinkles off. Having no sprinkles made her sad.

Ivan preferred his unadorned and favored the green pancakes. He ate three whole pancakes.

Then Ivan grabbed a sprinkle container in each hand and ran through the house shaking them while saying “Happy Hour! Happy Hour!” Nothing like being all sugared up early in the morning.
